History & Background

Uttara Ganabhaban, also known as Dighapatia Palace, was built in 1734 by Raja Doyaram, the dewan (minister) of Rani Bhabani, and was later expanded by successive generations of the Dighapatia Raj family. Blending European architectural influences, the palace features an imposing clock tower with a bell and clock imported from Italy, and gardens adorned with Italian marble statues. The government acquired the palace in 1972, and it now serves as the second official residence of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh in the northern region. On 9 March 2018, the Uttara Ganabhaban Museum was established in the old treasury building within the palace complex, showcasing artifacts from the Dighapatia Raj era.
