History & Background
Commissioned in 1961 when Bangladesh was still East Pakistan, American architect Louis Kahn designed this citadel of geometric concrete forms surrounded by an artificial lake, drawing on Mughal, Buddhist, and modernist influences. Construction was interrupted by the 1971 Liberation War and only completed in 1982, a decade after Kahn's death, making it one of independent Bangladesh's first great civic monuments. Its bold geometric cut-outs let in natural light while keeping interiors cool, an early example of climate-responsive modern design in South Asia.
