History & Background
Star Mosque, locally known as Tara Masjid, is one of Old Dhaka's most recognizable historic mosques. It was originally built by Mirza Ghulam Pir in the first half of the nineteenth century. In 1926, businessman Ali Jan Bepari renovated and decorated the mosque with star motifs and colorful Chini Tikri mosaic work, giving it the popular name Star Mosque. Later extensions added more domes while preserving the famous decorative character that makes it a landmark of Dhaka heritage.
