History & Background
Lalakhal is a narrow channel of the Sari River that flows down from the Khasi Hills near the India border, its color shifting between turquoise and jade depending on season and the mineral sediment carried down from the hills. The surrounding uplands hold several tea estates dating to the British colonial period, when tea cultivation spread through the Sylhet region from the 1850s onward, and boat trips down Lalakhal typically combine river scenery with a stop at one of these working tea gardens.
