History & Background
Formed where the Remakri River tumbles over a wide rock shelf deep in the Ruma upazila of Bandarban, Nafakhum lies in territory home to the Marma and Bawm indigenous communities and remained essentially unreachable to outside visitors until the early 2000s. Reaching it still requires travelers to obtain permission at an army checkpoint, take a long boat ride up the Sangu and Remakri rivers, and trek through jungle trails, making it one of the most adventurous — and rewarding — natural sites in Bangladesh.
