History & Background
Built as a military airbase and used by Allied forces as a forward base for the Burma campaign in WWII, the airport briefly saw Pakistan-era civil flights from 1958 before they stopped. Since 1983 the land has mostly been used by the Bangladesh Air Force for an agricultural project, with no scheduled commercial flights today. (A widely repeated claim that it was once "the largest airport in Asia" is not substantiated by any cited source and should be treated as a popular but unverified claim rather than fact.)
