History & Background
Declared a national park in 1980 to protect a stretch of hill forest where the Chittagong Hill Tracts range meets the Bay of Bengal, Himchari is home to elephants, deer, and numerous bird species, though human encroachment and the adjacent Marine Drive road have put pressure on its wildlife corridors. Its name derives from "Him" (snow/frost, referring to the cool spray of its waterfall) and "chari" (stream), and it remains a favored short excursion from Cox's Bazar for hikers wanting hill and sea views together.
