History & Background
Built in 1904 and named after Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India who laid its foundation stone, the building was originally intended as a town hall for Dhaka to mark the (short-lived) 1905 partition of Bengal. When Dhaka University was established in 1921, Curzon Hall became its science faculty, and it remains so today. Its blend of Mughal arches, European colonnades, and Rajasthani domes exemplifies the Indo-Saracenic Revival style favored by the British administration, and its lawns have long been a gathering place for student life and political movements.
