Joypurhat Sugar Mill was established in 1963 on a large industrial site in Joypurhat town. During the Liberation War in 1971 the mill area was used by the Pakistan army as a base, giving the site a difficult wartime memory as well as an industrial identity. In later decades the mill became one of the most recognizable names in Bangladesh sugar production despite recurring losses and environmental criticism.
