Construction of Pabna Sugar Mill began on 26 December 1992. Test production started in 1996, followed by commercial production in 1997. Public reporting notes an annual production figure of about 15,000 tons in its early commercial stage. In December 2020 the government ordered the mill closed with the stated plan of reopening after modernization, and the debate over reopening remains important to local farmers and workers.
