History & Background

1933: Established by the Surajmal and Nagarmal Company.

1965: Nationalized by the Government of Pakistan.

1971 Liberation War: Pakistani forces killed about 150 employees here in what became known as the "Gopalpur Massacre." The slain administrator Lt. M. Anwarul Azim was later awarded the Independence Award.

2008–2012: Production stopped because of sugarcane shortages and continuing losses.
